The Vineyards
| We feel that our vineyards are the
greatest resources we have. Wine is made in the vineyard, an old
paradigm, but more true today than ever before.
Through sustainable agriculture and organic farming principles
we are at work within the vineyard rows on a daily basis from budbreak
in April to harvest in October. Every farming method we have created
or implemented is meant to increase the vitality and potential of
each grapevine. By lowering crop yields to extremely low levels
(0.75 - 1.5 tons/acre), and through several stages of leaf, canopy
and soil management we are able to harvest extremely ripe fruit,
which gives us complex, ageworthy and classic Pinot Noirs, Pinot
Gris, and Chardonnay.
We have had the pleasure of working with other very fine vineyards
throughout Oregon. The men and women who farm these sites for us
are top-notch. Through very strict, mutually beneficial contracts,
we are able to control yields and farming practices to ensure that
only the best and most concentrated fruit comes out of these vineyards
and used in our wines.

The Hyland Vineyard
Hyland is one of Oregon's oldest vineyards and is definitely a
treasure of the Oregon wine industry. Farmed by Jack Trenhaile,
this 33 year-old vineyard sits high up on a hillside surrounded
by old-growth fir trees and rolling hills of witches' broom. These
old self-rooted Pommard, Wadenswil, and Coury-clone vines produce
some of Oregon's most ageworthy Pinot Noirs.
Bergström Winery manages five acres of vineyard here and every
year we are blown away by the quality and potential of this vineyard
to produce world-class Grand-Cru scale Pinot Noirs. |

The Shea Vineyard
In 2003, Bergström Winery joined forces with the Shea vineyard
for the first vintage of what promises to be a perfect relationship.
Our winemaking style favors world-class vineyard sites like Shea
and, needless to say, we are very excited to taste the ongoing results.
Dick Shea was very generous in offering us beautifully exposed acres
of vines to start working with.
Shea Vineyard is a 135 acre vineyard located just 2 miles west
of Bergström Winery and is named after Dick Shea who sells
fruits to both Oregon and California wineries as well as crafting
his own label. Bergström Winery is proud to have 8 acres of
Shea Vineyard under long term contract and through strict farming
and low yields annually (1.5 tons per acre) and careful fermentation
techniques we are able to create a wine with intense spice and fruit
on the nose with an enormous and lush attack of fruit in the mouth.
The Shea fruit for Bergstrom comes from Block Five high up on the
east hills of Shea Vineyard (Dijon 777 clone) and the Oak Block
down below on the same hill (Dijon 115 clone).

The Stoller
Vineyard
In 2003, we will also have the opportunity of working with the
magnificent Stoller vineyard under the watchful eyes of Bill Stoller
and Allen Holstein. This is a glorious vineyard site, which reminds
the eye of Le Cortan in Burgundy. We are very impatient for the
results from this grand terroir. Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
will come from this vineyard.

The Broadley
Vineyard
The Broadley Vineyard is owned by the Broadley family - located
in Monroe Oregon, halfway between Corvallis and Eugene in the rain
shadow of Mary's Peak. This Northeast facing vineyard has brought
years of drinking pleasure to many in the form of "Claudia's Choice
Pinot Noir", the Broadley Reserve label which garnered Oregon's
highest scoring wine in 1997 (Wine Spectator 97 points for the 1994
Broadley Claudia's Choice Pinot Noir)
The vineyard is located high on a hill facing north east and planted
with several Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. The vineyard seems to always
retain optimum ripeness of sugars, aroma and flavors while retaining
incredible natural acidity and tannic structure. This makes for
an incredible cellar candidate for the long term.
The Nysa Vineyard
The Nysa vineyard (pronounced Neesa) is located high up the Dundee
Hills, neighboring Domaine Drouhin's estate vineyard. Planted in
the early 80s by Michael Mega to Pommard and Wadenswil clone vines,
the Nysa vineyard is known for subtlety and elegance. The high elevation
allows for extended hang time and increased phenolic ripeness without
extreme sugars or low acids in the finished product. The Nysa Vineyard
will show classic Pinot Noir characters of bright, high-pitched,
tangy red berry fruits with crispness and verve. The natural acidity
and ripe suave tannins will allow for early enjoyment but also for
extended cellaring.

The Wahle Vineyard
Betty Wahle has been farming her vineyard since the early 1970s.
We were lucky to have started working with her Pinot Gris and Chardonnay
vines back in 2000. These old vines, deeply rooted in sandy Willakenzie
soils, high above the town of Carlton, give tremendous wines of
great concentration and character. We keep yields very low in this
vineyard (1-1.5 tons/acre), which means that the Wahle fruit is
always the backbone of our white wine.

The Arcus Vineyard
The Arcus vineyard is owned and farmed by Archery Summit Winery
in the Red Hills of Dundee. It is comprised of old vines, formerly
the Archibald and Maresh vineyards, and newer plantings of 7-10
year-old Dijon clone Pinot Noir.
We have had a close relationship to the Archery Summit team since
1999, and have been fortunate to be able to work with the Arcus
vineyard for our earlier vintages.
