When Josh Bergström returned from Burgundy in 1999, he was inspired to help lead the movement in Oregon towards great white wines. Wines that would help to define our region and shape our industry into something unique which still spoke of noble roots in the old world. Now, after 10 long years of study, experiment and hard work in some of the best Oregon vineyards, Bergström Wines is proud to release our flagship white wine, the 2006 Sigrid Chardonnay, which will indeed help to guide Oregon’s Chardonnay movement into the next generation.

The Sigrid Chardonnay is named for Josh’s Swedish grandmother who passed away during the 2006 harvest. As he traveled to Sweden with my father for her funeral in mid–October, he decided to dedicate this great wine of elegance and power to the woman who inspired three generations of Bergström children. Only the best barrels from the best vineyards are chosen for this small production wine. From more than 10 different vineyard blocks planted to Dijon, Draper and Wente clones, Josh selected the finest juice to be barrel fermented in new and old French oak barrels and stainless steel. From more than 150 barrels, I selected only the 10 best for the 2006 Sigrid and disregarded the rest, with no second label created. This is my expression of the greatest Oregon Chardonnay. This wine exhibits lemony tropical fruit aromas tinged with spice, hazelnuts and stone. The mouth-feel is lush and ripe but with a solid skeleton of mineral character and a bright core of acidity. The structure frames this wine in a youthful posture which will allow for years of extended ageing.
